All algorithms should be published, restable researchable. This is something that search engines don’t have at the moment and the process isnt transpartent ( Google).

Participatory: we should bring together W with other partnerships with trust networks to the problem of serach. Any propritary system limits the debate and we need to find new ways to find ways to search on the internet

We want to encourage innovation around the areas of searching. It needs to be free to change the competitive landsacpe of search to encourage global innovation.

What is free? the fre software and culture movement in the terms of GNU. Freedom to copy, redistribute, modified version, commenrcial or non.

In Wikia, there are communities (2500 plus) that are growing in parallel and the the search engine project where there is a wiki community of decvelopers and designers to have a dialogue about the situation.

At the beginning of the Open Software movement, there was a lot of scepticsm. Now there are enormous amounts of new business models around that basis (red hat, sendmail, mysql)

Why does it work? when you have open code, bugs can be fixed and the system can be impoved. There is a large number of people involved in the project. W has had exponential growth in terms of contributors.

Wikia is a for profit endeavour and has been more successful in terms of articles written.

eg. Sustainable action group as a group on Wikia, Foodopedia, Muppet Wiki,

Geek culture has made it so that the content of course at the beginning was more geek driven (wars on Star Trek)

Hope that the search project would be a way to get to the next piece of the puzzle and make a search engine from which he will be able to generate revenues from advertising.
