Kraft Guacamole: File under “Ew”

Back in November of 2006, a woman filed suit against Kraft Foods, Inc. about the amount of avocado in their “Kraft Dips Guacamole”. What’s in Kraft’s guacamole? According to the LA Times:

Like much of the prepared guacamole sold in supermarkets, Kraft guacamole is essentially a whipped paste made from partially hydrogenated soybean and coconut oils, corn syrup, whey and food starch. Yellow and blue dyes give it the green color.

The article goes on to say that Kraft’s guacamole contains less than 2% of avocado. Funnily, there’s a link within the article to a guacamole recipe that takes 10 minutes to prepare and requires 3 large avocados to produce 2 cups of guacamole. I say funnily because I suppose the only convenience factor in the Kraft guacamole is that it comes in a pouch, whereas you have to actually peruse the vegetable aisle to make the real stuff.

One interesting piece of knowledge I gleaned from this article is that peanut butter must, by law, contain at least 90% peanuts. Makes you wonder what the other 10% might be! But I suppose that 10% non-peanut matter in peanut butter is great compared to 98% non-avocado matter in Kraft guacamole.

Yuck!
