Condemning obesity

People who read this blog know that Dave and I are quite keen on looking at the issue of obesity in a holistic way. In my opinion, this complicated issue is often associated with that fuzzy concept we call “lifestyle choices” ie: what you eat and how much you move, because really that’s the only equation there is really. What you take in must either come out, be burnt out or get stored.

So when I start reading about attempts to make this issue a medical one, thus letting people assume it’s something that is no longer under their control but can only be “treated” with expensive medication, alerts sound off.

2 separate sources reported very differently about a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine. The research sought to find out if, like other types of diseases, obesity was contageous, and according to their criteria, found that it was…

If you dig a little deeper though, and if you’re used to enough academic BS, you’ll find that they relied on social networks as a criteria for analysis, and as Consumer freedom reports:

“Though adult social networks may be more nuanced than the jock clique or the chess team, adults form their relationships based on shared interests. A person who spends his or her free time training for a triathlon probably won’t gravitate to an overweight video gamer as a best friend. Remembering that birds of a feather flock together, the so-called “groundbreaking” news that overweight friends gain more weight over time is really just old hat … or better said, old fat.”

The NYT article however, isn’t that discerning and in no way questions the conclusion of the article. With the type of audience that they have and the social implications of the masses thinking that obesity is a contagious phenomenon, one would have though that they would be better journalists and investigate all sides of this issues. Unfortunately, it seems that the way things are going, removing responsibility from people of a very personal issue will lead to big pharma making more money and government officials pushing their own agendas onwards.
